Coffee for Coin!

Cape Town entrepreneurs Leona van Wyk & De Wet Strauss

We love Indiegogo.com, a place for dreamers and inventors! You can raise money for your project, whether it’s a video game, a documentary or a new restaurant in advance, which makes your personal risk a lot less. So Indiegogo is a great place for creative people from Cape Town to fund their dreams, like De Wet Strauss and Leona van Wyk who came up with Coffee for Coin,:”The first coffee shop that only accepts cryptocurrencies and ships its coffee directly to your door”

De Wet, can you tell us a little about yourself?
“I am an industrial engineer and Leona is an HR administrator, but more importantly we share a passion for delicious coffee and nifty technology. Coffee has always been an essential part of our lives, from late nights cramming sessions to first dates, you can always rely on coffee to pull you through. It has always been a dream of mine to open a coffee shop of my own and sell top quality coffee to the public.”

How does cryptocoin join the party?
“Being an engineer, I’m naturally always looking for the next innovation, and I usually find myself wrapped up in new tech all the time. I immediately fell in love with the concept when I realised the benefit it can have for developing countries and that it can actually decrease the money gap between the rich and the poor as transaction fees are nearly zero. To think that nowadays you can send money to a loved one million miles away and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.”

So how does it work?
“CoffeeforCoin will be the ideal platform and tool to teach users at a relatively early stage how to successfully transact with bitcoin and utilise it to their advantage. The solidification of bitcoin as a currency and the controversy surrounding it gave way to the launch of this exciting new platform.
The website takes the user through the process of setting up a wallet, exchanging money for bitcoin and in the end trading a fraction of the bitcoin in exchange for delicious coffee. It’s presented in both English and Afrikaans and it was designed to be user friendly and informative.”

How did you come up with the idea?
We have a vacation home in Kleinbaai, close to Gansbaai and Leona and I are self-proclaimed coffee addicts to say the least. Usually when are on holiday we buy coffee beans from local roasters. So, when I initially began to take a keen interest in the exciting field of cryptocurrency, especially bitcoin, the seed was planted. The idea was born to begin the first coffee retailer, shop that only accepts cryptocurrencies and ships its coffee directly to your door.

If you succeed with this part of the plan, what will be the next step?
“We already started crowdfunding campaigns on both Jumpstarter
and Indiegogo which we hope will help raise capital in order to make this dream a reality. The end goal would be to launch a couple coffee shops in South Africa that will educate people on bitcoin and sell delicious coffee beans.”
